This hands-on photography class introduces students to the art and science of digital photography, building a strong foundation in both creative and technical skills. Students will explore how photography began, how cameras work, and how photographers use light, settings, and composition to tell a story through images.

The class begins with a brief history of photography, from early processes like daguerreotypes and film to modern digital cameras, helping students understand how today’s tools evolved. Students are then introduced to the photographer’s toolkit, including cameras, lenses, tripods, and flash equipment.

A major focus of the class is exposure, taught through the “Three Kings” of photography: ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. Students learn how each setting affects brightness, motion blur, depth of field, and image quality, and how to adjust them for different shooting situations.

Students also explore camera settings, including white balance, shooting modes (portrait, landscape, action, macro, night), and how cameras interpret color and light. From there, the class dives into composition techniques such as subject placement, the rule of thirds, framing, leading lines, perspective, and angles—helping students create visually interesting and intentional photos.

The class covers lighting basics, including natural light, artificial light, and flash, teaching students how to work with light rather than fight it. Students also learn posing techniques for photographing people, focusing on comfort, expression, balance, and visual harmony.

Finally, students are introduced to a wide range of careers in photography, from portrait and wedding photography to fashion, sports, commercial, wildlife, news, and photo editing—opening their eyes to real-world creative possibilities.

By the end of the class, students will have a solid understanding of how cameras work, how to make creative choices behind the lens, and how photography can be both an art form and a potential career path
